Matarbari

Matarbari Port is a proposed deep-sea port in the Matarbari area of Chittagong Division, Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh. Coal loading jetty for power plant at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar district will be expanded and constructed as a full-fledged commercial port. Vessels of at least 15 meters in depth or draft can easily enter this port. The depth of the proposed Matarbari port is 16 meters and each vessel will be able to carry more than 8,000 containers. Currently, ships with draft depths less than 9-meters are docked at Chittagong and Mongla, the country’s two seaports can enter JICA is constructing a naval channel about 14.3 km long for the purpose of establishing Matarbari port. The main navigational channel is 350 meters wide. Along with this, a 100-meter-long jetty will be constructed with the funding of the port. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved on March 10, 2020. The deep-sea port’s multipurpose terminal will be ready for Container ships in November 2026 and a coal terminal will be constructed by August 2022.
The preliminary plan for the construction of Matarbari port includes two terminals in the first phase. General cargo and container terminals will accommodate large vessels (mother vessels), which cannot currently dock at any port jetty in Bangladesh. The first phase of construction, the container terminal will be built on 18 hectares of land and will have a 460-meter-long berth. It will be able to accommodate 8,000 TEU vessels and will have an annual capacity of 6,00,000 to 1.1 million TEU.
